There is no exact count, but the figure ranges between 100 and over 200 people. The first death was due to trauma received after the lady jumped out of her 3rd story apartment window.

The iron curtain ("from the Baltic in the north to the Adriatic in the south") was not imaginary. Many people died trying to flee East Germany.
Very few people were trying to escape West Berlin; West Berlin was part of democratic West Germany. Conversely, many East Germans were trying to flee to West Berlin in order to find freedom. They wanted to see their dear ones, separated from them by the Berlin Wall.
They were worried that the people would try to escape over to West Germany. That's why soldiers were posted to shoot anyone who dared to come around. The communists wanted to keep their power over East Germany safe.
Most East Berliners who were trying to escape were shot or imprisoned; only the lucky ones survived the treacherous and, mostly, deadly dash to freedom.

The Berlin wall started when Germany was divided up into 4 section 1 for the U.S 1 for the USSR 1 for France and 1 for Britain then after that the people in east Berlin were trying to escape communism by fleeing into the western side of Germany the communist were angry and decided to built a wall stopping all from crossing the boarder.
