Perhaps as few as a single man with a vision or by hundreds as was the case of Mount Rushmore where Gutzon Borglum provided the inspiration and vision and a crew of as many as 400 spent 14 years carving and blasting granite to produce a monumental 60 foot carving of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln to honor the Nation's first 150 years of history. Michelangelo completed both the Pieta and David before he reached the age of 30 but history does not record how many apprentices and laborers assisted him in their creation.
