According to articles in The Guardian (5.10.09 and 1.5.12) by Severin Carrell , a reputable journalist , : FIFTEEN A YEAR , at least until the much publicised deaths of two teenage girls in October 2009 resulted in the erection of a high fence on either side of the bridge. Whether this appalling statistic refers to an average or a maximum figure and whether it refers to records going back to the bridge's opening in 1971 is not clear . Tragic though the deaths of Neve Lafferty and Georgina Rowe were, it makes you wonder why so much was made of the event by the media if it was so commonplace (the ages and known background or the girls excepted , perhaps) - and why nothing was done earlier to discourage such incidents . Fifteen a year since the bridge had opened would mean 600 deaths : is this credible ?
according to skywaybridge.com, as of december 2012:
unofficial totals: 212 suicides + 34 survivors + 1 murder = 247 jumpers
A secondhand account is one of which that your getting it from someone other then the actual witness. example That man witnessed someone fall from the bridge and jumped to save him. Your first hand is witnessing the man jumping in to save him. Your second hand is that that man said he saw someone else fall from the bridge.

Just 1 so far.
No one is known to have committed suicide on the bridge, but the San Francisco Chronicle reports that more than 1,250 have killed themselves by jumping off of it. The exact number is not known, because there are some bodies found that might have jumped off the bridge, but it isn't known for sure. And there are certainly people who jumped off and no one observed it and the body was never recovered.
