It's actually not an allergy to MSG. The active part of MSG, glutamate, is used as a neruotransmitter in the brain and other nerve cells. Excess glutamate can overstimulate these brain cells and other nerve cells throughout the body and cause many different symptoms. Some people are very sensitive to MSG, but they're not allergic to it. One study showed that 25% of the people who consumed MSG in a meal reported having symptoms following MSG consumption. But when the people where given MSG without a meal in the morning, after being in a fasted state all night, all of the people reported symptoms from the MSG. Even moderately low blood sugar such as being in a fasted state all night or intense exercise will make you more sensitive to MSG.

Yeah you can be allergic to anything - there are some unfortunate people who are allergic to sunlight :( I am 13 and I am allergic to the sunlight. It is weird and it sucks. 25% of the USA population is. If I am in a bright room or outside w/ the sun shining on my face, I will start sneezing. sometimes I can sneeze 9 times in a row.
