No one person can be said to have led the Underground Railroad; it was more of a movement that grew out of a reaction to the institution of slavery itself.
But inspiration could probably be drawn from abolitionist John Brown, who advocated any means necessary (including violence) in the abolition of slavery. He paid the ultimate price, allowing himself to be hanged (rather than rescued) in Virginia in 1859 after a failed munitions raid on a federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, in what is now West Virginia.
