In James Hitchcock's History of the Catholic Church, on page 301, he puts a brief note about the Puritan leader Oliver Cromwell (d. 1658) invaded and brutally suppressed all resistance [in Ireland], beginning a policy of seizing the lands of the Catholic nobility and systematically settling English and Scottish Proestants in their place. Under the circumstances, I do not think that the Catholics thought too highly of him having their lives brutally suppressed and their property stolen.

Oliver Cromwell was an Englishman and a member of Parliament. When King Charles I changed the official religion of England from Protestant to Roman Catholic, Cromwell led a revolt against the King. The Protestant forces won and King Charles was hanged. Cromwell then became president of England and England became officially Protestant again. During Cromwell's time the government made a number of reforms. Shortly after Cromwell died, England decided to become a monarchy again. Charles II, the son of Charles I, announced that he was a Protestant and returned from France to claim the throne. (He was willing to attend a protestant church once to have the crown put on his head. Since he attended church inside his castle, no one really knew what he really was. Everyone suspected he was a Roman Catholic.) Some of the reforms made under Cromwell remained and some were repealed. An Englishman! Oliver Cromwell was a opportunist. When he went bankrupt through maladministration of his estate, he lived off tithes stolen from the Anglican Church and contributed to by his neighbours, He became a soldier and was an exceptional junior officer, even rising to the rank of general. Whilst he saw great success he is chiefly noted for the massacre of Roman Catholics Unfortunately, he was free with other people's lives and had a streak of cruelty especially with the opposition's lives! This he shared with his religious friends and supporters , the Calvinists. Cromwell being responsible for the murder of Welsh Speaking women, [Anglicans,] who were murdered after Naseby. He was responsible for the massacre at Basing House, 1645, for the Romanist garrison. Later as a General in Ireland, again the Romanists suffered, both Irish and English, in a series of massacres designed to reduce the will to fight of his opponents.
