That's really impossible to say. As for romantic love, Dickens himself loved at least three women (that we know of) and we know that at least one of them (his wife Catherine) returned his love. Otherwise, Dickens was and is loved by millions, everywhere in the world.

Dickens was not just immediately successful with his writing, he sustained that popularity until his death. Although he earned a great deal of money in his lifetime, he had many calls on his pocket: he supported ten children, sisters and brothers and often their spouses and ex-spouses, parents, later a 'friend' Ellen Ternan. When he separated from his wife in 1858, he had to maintain two households. Additionally, he travelled a good deal and was a generous contributor to various charities.
