not very many but the ones that did were rescued by William Tecumseh sherman
At least 2,985 died in the whole thing. I heard that approximately 20,000 survived (presumably an estimate primarily of how many would've occupied the 2 towers on a Tuesday morning, less those who perished.)
Roughly 10.7 million slaves survived the Middle Passage.
Approximately 70,000 American troops landed and survived D-Day.

it was said it was meant to hold 10.000 prisoners but ended up with over 30.000
Overcrowding. As many as 6 times too many prisoners in a confederacy that had trouble feeding it's own soldiers.
I think the one your thinking of is Fort Sumter (aka Andersonville)
Miserable! There were too many Union prisoners, and not enough food, drinking water, or shelter. Thousands of prisoners died.
