About 16,000 people where killed.
Only 77 people have ever died due to Mount Etnas eruptions, such as the 9 tourists who died due to small sudden vent clearance which showered them with ash, lava ect. Mount Etna is a slow flowing volcano which usually allows people time to evacuate.
It only killed one person but extensive residential damage was caused, that is no where near as much as the cost for the annual fires though.
The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens killed 57 people.
The Mount Meakan eruption in 1929 resulted in the deaths of at least 3 people.
