How do you forge guns?

To make the barrel of the gun, which is the only part of the gun that i know how to make, gunsmiths started out with a long, flat iron bar. They heated it up and bent/curved it lengthwise (with a hammer) until it looked like a "C" with the sides (width) of the bar almost touching. Next, they had to forge weld the sides together. This was done by heating the iron up, putting some carbon powder between the two sides, and then mashing them together. This is excluding how they put the rifling into the barrel because i cannot remember how it was done, other than the fact that it took many hours of work.

Should gunsmiths be responsible for guns?
