The number of people working in a gunsmith's forge can vary widely depending on the size and scope of the operation. Small, independent gunsmiths may work alone or with one assistant, while larger facilities or manufacturers might employ a team of several skilled gunsmiths and support staff. Typically, a small forge could have anywhere from one to five people, while larger operations could have a dozen or more. Ultimately, the workforce size depends on the production volume and the range of services offered.

How do you forge guns?

To make the barrel of the gun, which is the only part of the gun that i know how to make, gunsmiths started out with a long, flat iron bar. They heated it up and bent/curved it lengthwise (with a hammer) until it looked like a "C" with the sides (width) of the bar almost touching. Next, they had to forge weld the sides together. This was done by heating the iron up, putting some carbon powder between the two sides, and then mashing them together. This is excluding how they put the rifling into the barrel because i cannot remember how it was done, other than the fact that it took many hours of work.

Gunsmiths have knowledge in how guns work and how they are made. They are also qualified to sell, maintain, repair and design guns. All of this knowledge and ability comes through training and apprenticeship so definitely courses or education is needed in order to be a gunsmith.

Should gunsmiths be responsible for guns?
