Every year between 150 and 165 law enforcement officers are killed in the line of duty. Rougly 56% of that is due to traffic accidents while the other 46% is due to heart attacks, shooting incidents, etc.

The Idaho Peace Officers' Memorial is located in Meridian, Idaho on the grounds of the Idaho State Police Headquarters. The purpose of the memorial is to recognize the sacrifices of those officers who have given their lives in the line of duty. The memorial provides a place of solace for families of these fallen officers and also honors those who currently serve the citizens of Idaho. Each year after the week of May 15 (National Police Week), groups of people gather together to honor the peace officers who gave their life in the line of duty.
They usually have to do something heroic. . . and die doing it. They save lives, help against disaster, or protect members of the public or other police officers.
