The Roman empire became famous mainly because of its size and its longevity. Its artifacts and literature added to its fame and its legal concepts form the basis of many of our present day laws.
The first true empire was created by Julius Caesar --or so it is thought. But in reality Rome was already an empire long before Caesar came on the scene. The empire began when Rome expanded into Italy, then won the Punic Wars, Pompey and Sulla added territory in the East. Caesar only added Gaul to enlarge the empire.
