My 86 2.5 only holds 3 quarts with a filter. The filter is mounted upside down so to prevent the oil from running all over the engine I puncture the bottom of the filter so the oil drains to the pan and out.
The best way to be certain is to check the manual. You could fill one quart less than stated, run the engine enough to fill the new filter (~60 seconds) then stop and check the level on the dipstick. Add as needed.
