Britain did not accept refugees into camps. They had to have a guarantee from an individual or organization in order to be admitted to the country.

After the outbreak of war in 1939, enemy aliens whose status was deemed suspect or was unclear were sent to internment camps.

In June 1940, at the end of the evacuation from Dunkirk, a number of civilians were brought to Britain in addition to the soldiers brought back. There was an immediate clamour in sections of the popular press to 'intern the lot'. The government gave in to this pressure and interned all German, Austrian and Italian male persons of military age, including those who had previously been classified as refugees from Nazi oppression. They were all rounded up and sent to hastily improvised camps, such as the one at Huyton and various camps on the Isle of Man ... Once there, tribunals was established to judge the bona fides of the prisoners. Many were released within a few months.
