The US Constitution is divided into Articles, each of which is further subdivided into Sections.

Articles 1-10 were used to persuade the colonists to ratify the Constitution. The states wanted their rights written down on paper to prevent the government from taking them away later, so the Bill of Rights (amendments 1-10) were created and the original 13 colonies ratified the Constitution.
There are three: The Preamble, The 7 Articles, and the 27 (so far) Amendments.

The Articles of Confederation were proposed in 1777 and were ratified by the thirteen states by March 1, 1781. They served as the first constitution of the United States, establishing a loose confederation of states with a weak central government. The Articles were eventually replaced by the U.S. Constitution in 1789 due to their many limitations.
