Instead, Lords are appointed for life, according occasional party lists nominated by the political Party leaders or by the independent House of Lords Appointments Commission. The campaign group Operation Black Vote identifies 24 non-white members of the current House of Lords. There are no official figures, as questions on ethnicity have never been put to the Lords themselves. Of the 24 minority members, two are of identifiably African or Caribbean ancestry.
Law Lords are not permitted to sit in the House of Lords until they retire at the age of 75. There are currently 20 Law Life Peers who are able to sit in the Lords, five of which are currently on a leave of absence.
