In the food pyramid, there are six food groups which are organized based upon how much of each type of food should be consumed. The bottom of the pyramid is made up of breads and grains, and it is suggested that people receive 6-11 servings of this food group. Breads and grains provide carbohydrates for the body, which serve as a great source of energy. The next level of the pyramid contains vegetables and fruits, which people should eat because these foods are rich in nutrients. It is suggested that people receive 3-5 servings of vegetables and 2-4 servings of fruit. The next food group consists of meat, beans, eggs, and fish. These foods provide the body with protein, iron, and zinc, and people should consume 2-3 servings of these types of food. The dairy group comes next in the food pyramid, consisting of foods such as cheese and yogurt. Dairy foods are high in protein and vitamins and minerals, especially calcium, which helps to strengthen bones, thus people should consume 2-3 servings of food from this food group. The last level of the food pyramid contains fats and sweets, which is the smallest portion because people should eat small amounts of these unhealthy foods. This level includes foods such as butter, candy, and salad dressing.

There are many different versions of the food pyramid, and the pyramid may be edited to fit certain diets for both losing and gaining weight.
