Morgan silver dollars were minted 1900-04 (originally starting in 1878), and again in 1921. Then Peace silver dollars were minted from 1921 until 1928, as well as 1934 and '35. No dollar coins were minted again until 1971 with the introduction of the Eisenhower dollar, though by then they were made of nickel-coated copper instead of silver, except for some collector specimens. In 1979, there was a change to the smaller Susan B. Anthony dollar, which was only minted for three years, and again in 1999. For a complete set of 20th century U.S. dollar coins from Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, and San Francisco, including all proof and collector versions, there are 18 Morgans, 24 Peace, 32 Eisenhower, and 11 Anthony dollars, for a grand total of 85 different coins.

Note: Some dates have more than one variety, such as the 1972-P Eisenhower or 1979-S Anthony, which would add to the total.

Why is a 5 cent coin called a nickel?

It's actually a bit complicated. Nickel metal is heavily used for coins today because it's inexpensive and is very hard, so nickel coins don't wear out quickly. But when the Mint first starting making coins nickel couldn't be used because it was so hard it damaged the relatively primitive coin presses then in use. By the middle of the 19th century metallurgy had improved enough that the Mint started experimenting with making low-denomination coins out of an alloy of 25% nickel and 75% copper. The first coins to use that alloy were a 3¢ piece in 1865. and a 5¢ piece the next year. At the same time the Mint also issued smaller coins with the same denominations but made of a silver alloy. To distinguish them, people started referring to them by their denominations and metal; e.g. "three cent silvers", "three cent nickels", and so on. By 1873 the nickel coins had proven to be successful so the silver versions were discontinued, but people still talked about "three cent nickels" and "five cent nickels". The nickel 3¢ piece was discontinued 16 years later, leaving "five cent nickels" as the only coin remaining of the original four. The denomination was no longer needed to distinguish the coin, so its name was eventually shortened to just "nickel".

When was the US nickel minted?

The coin now called a "nickel" was introduced in 1866 as a replacement for the inconvenient and unpopular half-dime, a tiny silver coin that was easily lost. Nickels have been minted almost every year since then, the major exception being 1932-33 during the depth of the Depression. The coin was one of the first to be minted in the now-common alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel. Nickel is a very hard metal which caused a lot of problems with die breakage until stronger presses were developed. Regardless of Internet stories, the ONLY nickels that ever contained silver were special coins minted during WWII. From mid-1942 to 1945 nickels did contain a small amount of silver because nickel metal was needed for the war effort. The coin's nickname has an interesting history. In the middle of the 19th century the Mint also struck 3-cent coins intended to simplify the purchase of postage stamps. Initially both these coins and half-dimes were made of silver but during the transition to nickel coinage both denominations were struck in both metals. To distinguish them in conversation people referred to "three-cent nickels", "three-cent silvers", etc. By the late 19th century half-dimes and both three-cent coins had been discontinued which left only the "five-cent nickel", and the name quickly contracted to "nickel".
