From Wikipedia's article on the Battle of the Somme:

Strength13 British and 11 French divisions (initial)

51 British and 48 French divisions (final)10½ divisions (initial)

50 divisions (final)Casualties and losses623,907 casualties

100 tanks lost,

782 aircraft lost[5]465,000 - 595,294 men

This is somewhat incomplete, as only the British/French side has an accounting of material losses, and the number of soldiers in a division isn't explicitly defined, though the article on military divisions says that number ranges from 10 to 30 thousand.

The original British Expeditionary Force, six divisions strong at the start of the war, had been wiped out by the battles of 1914 and 1915. The bulk of the army was now made up of volunteers of the Territorial Force and Lord Kitchener's New Army, which had begun forming in August 1914. The expansion demanded generals for the senior commands, so promotion came at a rapid pace and did not always reflect ability. Haig started the war as the commanding officer of British I Corps, then was promoted to command the British First Army and then the BEF, an army group eventually comprising sixty divisions in five armies. This vast increase in numbers diluted troop quality and undermined the confidence inexperienced commanders had in their men; this was especially true of Rawlinson.

In all truth YOU have put this question wrong. The battle of the somme was a 6 month long battle. You have also put how many British Soldiers attacked battle of the somme. This a gramaticaly incorrect statemant. Please learn the correct terms before putting a rather....... well lets just stay nice and leave it at that. Plus it is hard to put an exact amount of how many fought. Many went MIA before even fighting. then you had desertion. Its easier to give a caualty number than a total fighting number
