Usually one hundred, at least at the start of the war. A few less, a few more did not really matter. Once in camp ten companies made a regiment, but the soldiers started getting sick. These were mostly all farm boys, raised on isolated farms, never exposed to common childhood diseases. After a new regiment was put "though the fevers", losing men to death from disease and medical discharge, maybe 50 might be left. Some states tried to recruit new replacements for existing regiments, some regiments sent an officer of each company back home to try to build up company strength. Many governors preferred to create new regiments rather than bring existing veteran formations up to strength, because in some states the governor got to name the new colonels, a nice chance to distribute some political patronage.
So, the ideal was one hundred to a company, but that many were rarely present after the first few weeks, and certainly not after a few big battles.
