If Young-Earth creationists are right and all the species we know today, including all the now-extinct species, were created in the beginning, then many millions of species were created in the beginning. The Bible tells us that God presented each species to Adam, who named them all.
If science is right, as the evidence tells us, then there were few species at first. Biodiversity came with the gradual process of evolution. Science does not attempt to answer whether God played a part in the creation of species, allowing that to be a matter of faith alone.
