Forty-eight, in six rows of eight. Just like in WWI. Arizona became the 48th state in 1912; Alaska and Hawaii did not become the 49th and 50th states until 1959. However, because Alaska joined the US in January 1959 as the 49th state the 49 star flag became official on July 4th 1959. Hawaii joined the US in August 1959 as the 50th state and the new 50 star flag became official on July 4th 1960.
