There are not called states, but "cantons", and there are 26 of them. (Appenzell RE, Appenzell RI, Argovie, Bâle-Campagne, Bâle-Ville, Berne, Glaris, Grisons, Lucerne, Nidwald, Obwald, St-Gall, Schaffouse, Schwyz, Soleure, Thurgovie, Uri, Zoug, Zurich were there is a majority of German speakers; Fribourg and Valais, where there are German speakers as well as French speakers, Genève, Jura, Neuchâtel and Vaud where we speak predominantly French, and Tessin, which is an Italian-speaking canton)
