Abraham Lincoln was elected as US President, for the first time on November 6, 1860. On this date, none of the Southern States had seceded from the Union, and there were 35 states, in the US.

The following month, South Carolina declared its secession on December 20, 1860.

By the time Lincoln took office on March 4, 1861, 7 Southern States had declared secession from the Union.
