Driving from Texas to Indiana, you may or may not drive through Illinois. There are several different ways you could go, some of which go through Illinois and some of which do not.
If you drove in a straight line from the center of Ohio to the center of Arizona, you would pass through Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico.

You would have to drive through: Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. Or drive across the bridge in Sault Saint Marie into Ontario and follow the water to Windsor, then cross the bridge/tunnel into Detroit.
