On the actual day, around 2,000 Tanks were deployed to Normandy. However, by the end of Operation Overlord, the major operation in normandy, there was atleast 6,000 tanks involved. 4,000 were allied and 2,000 were German Tanks.

However, most of these tanks were under Hitler's direct control and he refused to release them until mid-afternoon on the 6th. The Canadians concentrated on getting tanks ashore as early as possible. the British were not far behind. Together the Canadians and British landed over 900 tanks on the first day. -I am not certain about American tank numbers, but do know that many of their DD tanks sank far off the beaches through being launched early, or were blown up on Omaha Beach. We only hear of a few American tank engagements on the first day or two, so I believe their tanks came mainly after the 6 th.
