Typically leagues contain 8-12 teams. 12 team leagues require owners to know who the good breakout players may be that year as well as the good 3rd string WR's and 2nd string RB's so they can have them on their bench in case the starters in front of them get benched.
If you go beyond 12 teams, you're picking up 4th and 5th string players and you almost end up not having enough good players to even fill all the 14 or 16 rosters.
I recommend 10-12 teams per league.
