All but John Adams served two terms. The total of the first five was nine terms or 36 years (almost - Washington's first term was about an month short.)

In France, a presidential term lasts for five years. This duration was established by a constitutional reform in 2000, which reduced the term from seven years. Presidents can be re-elected for additional terms, but there is no limit on the number of terms they can serve.

The constitutional law of 23 July 2008 changed this rule to a president can serve no more than two consecutive terms. To date, only two presidents have served two full terms, Jacques Chirac and Francois Mitterrand. Coincidentally, both presidents served these terms before this law was instated.
