On November 18, 1883, the United States adjusted its clocks to Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5), Central Standard Time (UTC-6), Mountain Standard Time (UTC-7) and Pacific Standard Time (UTC-8).
Hawaii Standard Time (UTC-10.5) came on January 13, 1896, and, in Alaska, in addition to Pacific Standard Time, Yukon Standard Time (UTC-9), Central Alaska Standard Time (CAT, UTC-10) and Nome Standard Time (UTC-11) came on August 20, 1900. The United States didn't try Daylight Saving Time until March 31, 1918.

Time zones were officially established in the US on November 18, 1883 by the railroads in order to standardize schedules. This was known as the Standard Time Act, which divided the US into four time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific.
On 18 Nov 1883, the United States, including the Territories of Washington, Idaho, Montana, Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, and Indian Territory, were organized into four time zones, Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5), Central Standard Time (GMT-6), Mountain Standard Time (GMT-7), and Pacific Standard Time (GMT-8).(Alaska Territory was not organized into time zones until 20 Aug 1900.)
Time zones were first introduced in the United States in 1883 by the American railroad industry to standardize schedules and improve efficiency. This system was implemented after the Interstate Commerce Commission established 4 standard time zones for the continental US.
Time zones were in use decades before 1883. Iceland's started in 1837, and the U.K. started in 1847. 1883 was when the United States adopted them, and as much as this information is going to break your heart, I have to tell you anyway: we are not the center of the universe. Before time was standardized into zones, each city kept its own time. As the railroads and the telegraph made transportation and communication faster, it became more and more difficult to handle all the different times. It's confusing enough with about 40 time zones around the world; imagine when there were thousands!
