Barack Obama lost only one election during his career. After serving several terms as a state senator in Illinois, he decided to challenge a popular U.S. Representative, Bobby Rush, in the year 2000. He lost badly, and by his own admission, did not run a very effective campaign. He returned to the Illinois state senate for another term, and when he ran for the U.S. Senate in 2004, he showed he had learned from his mistakes by winning the senate seat.
