The mayans obsessed over astrology, and could predict when there would be an eclipse thousands of years after their civilization ended. Also, they did not believe the world would end, they believed that there would be something cataclysmic happening around that time. The calender they believed in was more accurate than today's calender, and it has ended four times before. I wouldn't worry about the world ending any time soon, I would just expect a big natural disaster.
