A puppy should go to the veterinarian four times in his first year of life - once at 8 weeks of age, again at 12 weeks, again at 16 weeks and finally to be spayed/neutered before turning 6 months old.
After this, a healthy dog with no medical concerns should see a veterinarian once or twice a year for vaccines and an overall health exam. Older dogs (typically dogs that are over 7 years old; small and toy breeds can wait until 10 years of age) should be seen every six months to keep an eye out for chronic problems such as organ failure or cancer.
