The flag of the United States of America has been changed 27 times, beginning with the first flag on June 14, 1777. It had 13 stars and 13 stripes. The second flag was made official in 1795 when two more states were admitted: Vermont and Kentucky. This flag from 1795 to 1818 had 15 stars and 15 stripes. Then in 1818 the flag was changed back to 13 stripes adding a star for each new state admitted to the U.S. The remaining 23 flags were made official on July 4th at various intervals until the latest flag with 50 stars representing Hawaii statehood (August 1959) became official on July 4th 1960.
