The Red Baron was downed by enemy fire 3 times. He was downed the first time on March 6, 1917 but did not receive any injuries. On July 6, 1917 he was downed for the second time and received a head injury that required him to spend time in the hospital. On April 21, 1918 he was killed when his plane was brought down by most likely antiaircraft fire from the ground.

A pilot was NOT the one who shot him down. He shot by ground fire. The fatal shots came from Australian soldiers of the 4th Machine Gun Battalion. Actually the shooter was Captin Roy Brown he made a huge dive towards the Red Baron and fired 2 deadly shots. From the angle it was rather possible that one of the shots struck the red baron, killing him, but the plane was perfectally fine.
