There are many media players available for Linux. The best location to download them is from your distro's package repository.
There are many different websites that distribute a variety Linux operating systems. The most popular place for desktop distributions computers is Ubuntu.
There are many ways to categorize Linux distributions. You can categorize them by their size, whether they run on a LiveCD, whether they are provided gratis, their ancestry of other Linux distros, and the purpose the distro is meant to serve.
There aren't many good Linux distros that work well on notebook computers. However if Ubuntu is the standout choice if you really want Linux on your LapTop computer.
Creating a Linux distro is a fairly involved task, which is why it is usually done by teams and not individuals. Assuming you were to create your own from scratch, you would need to compile a Linux kernel and related programs, and write your own init scripts. Try compiling just the Linux kernel, and you'll see why few people bother to build the entire thing themselves. It would be far too difficult to remain current with most software packages. If you want to distribute it to other people, you'll also need to figure out things like warranty, support, and update management. LFS (Linux from Scratch) is an excellent guide on building a very basic Linux distro yourself, and learning what is involved in the process. For a simpler process that does not require too much time or programming knowledge, look into creating a distro based on an existing one. Many distros offer automated or semi-automated tools to help you do so.
MicroSoft Windows - Windows 8 : Linux - Ubuntu 14.04 are two examples. Note: Linux is the name of the kernel, while Ubuntu is a distribution (distro) and is one of many Operating Systems available to Linux users for free.
There is no reason why a Linux OS (of any distro) can not be used without an internet connection. Provided that either an Linux type OS is downloaded and written as an IOS on a CD (for one example) to be used as a live CD with the options of trying or installing. Or you have been given the install disk, so not needing the internet! There are many operating systems and therefore, many opinions on what distro is the "best"! Have a look at Linux Mint or Ubuntu - my choice!
a distro is a distrobution. a modified version of a Linux kernal (of which there are many!) check http://distrowatch.com/ to see which one suits you and also find out more information on Linux distros. think of it as like distros are just different versions, like win xp, vista, 95, 98, me, win2000 etc. all are built around the same structure, some are just built and modified and updated in different ways and work differently on different computers due to hardware and available Linux drivers for your hardware.
There are a number of tools that can be used to recover data on Linux. These include Knoppix, Avira Antivir, Ubuntu Rescue Remix and SystemRescueCd. These are just examples of many tools that can be used.
It's neither. Linux is its own family of operating systems. It is modeled after Unix and shares many design goals, but it is not completely inter-operable. Also, to be legally called a "version of Unix", an operating system must go through a rigorous and expensive certification test, which no Linux distro has currently done. No. Linux is not an *anything* Unix.
The question is too vague to answer clearly. There are too many versions of Linux and Unix and third party vendors.
It's open source, meaning you can make a change to the code and distribute it if you likeit's freeHas a wast range of flavors, aka "distributions" also commonly known as "distro"sHighly customisableYou can get support from many users
