How many types of drugs are known to exist?

There are many different categories of drugs:

Stimulants:

Stimulants speed up or stimulate the central nervous system and can make the users feel more awake, alert or confident. Stimulants increase heart rate, body temperature and blood pressure. Other physical effects include reduced appetite, dilated pupils, talkativeness, agitation and sleep disturbance.

Nicotine, caffeine and ephedrine are the most common stimulants.

Hallucinogens.

Hallucinogens cause the user to experience things that are not real. They may see things that are not really there, mentally think things that really don't make much sense, see things that are logically impossible, see shapes, talk to people or creatures that are not really there.

One of the most common hallucinogens is Lysergic Acid (LSD). This causes the user to have euphoric hallucinogens, and many people have had religious experiences from it. The effects of it can last up to 12 hours.

Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is regarded as one of the strongest hallucinogens. It is contained in many plants and is also generated in your brain. When an unborn baby becomes conscious, large amounts of DMT are generated by the brain. Milliseconds before you die, you receive a massive dose of DMT. When you sleep, dreams are actually hallucinations due to DMT and other substances.

This drug is extracted from many plants and smoked. When users are conscious they drug usually see patterns, aliens, or a phenomena called "Machine Dwarfs". The effects of this drug only last 5-10mins, however it feels like a couple of hours up to a lifetime for the user.

Salvia divinorum is another common hallucinogen, it is legal in many countries, and is also regarded as one of the strongest naturally occurring hallucinogens. It effects are very similar to DMT, however it is not as strong. Its effects last 5-10mins.
