This really depends upon the type of pollution. There are water borne diseases such as cholera, which can be present in polluted water and can infect people. There are toxic substances such as lead and mercury which can be present in polluted water and poison people. There are many other types of pollution as well.
Typhoid fever and most of the other diseases were treated by priests at that time.
The only diseases I know are typhoid and pneumonia.
