Serving aboard a ship, you would learn all the various aspects of sailing, and various jobs involved in running a ship. Of your own choice, you would take additional classes and various exams over time as they came up, to further your position, assignment or "rank". Over a long period of time, you might ascend to the role of First Mate, and then apply for - or be assigned to - a captaincy, as it became available.
