This depends whether is meant the time period it refers to, or the maximum time taken to write it. The Old Testament refers to the period from eternity past to eternity future ie infinity, but was written between the period from Creation in 4004BC (Ussher) to when Malachi (the last book of the Old Testament) was written (about 400BC) ie 3600 years.
However, if instead events are looked at physically, then the Old Testament covers the period from Creation in 4004 (Ussher) to until God builds His own Temple in Jerusalem , which we know from the New Testament is after Christ returns to the Earth. This means that, if Christ returned today, the time span in years is at least 4004 [Creation] + 2014 [up to present year] -1 [no year Zero] + 7 [Tribulation] = 6024 years.
If events are looked at spiritually, then it is an eternity, since the period starts from the creation of Angels in Eternity past to some unknown time in the far future, meaning it is from eternity past to eternity future. However, since 'Time' itself is the fourth dimension it means it was created, and since it is physical it therefore cannot be used to measure time spiritually.
There are a range of answers to this - most all within 50-100 years. If we use Ussher's first year as 4004 BC and the birth of Christ as 5-4 BC we have 4,000 years. Considering what most use as the last writing in the Old Testament as Malachi occurring 400 years before Jesus' birth, then the Old Testament span was 3,600 years.
