The historians Eusebius and Gildas both state that Christianity (ipso facto - the catholic (sic) Church, later the Catholic (sic) Church) arrived in Britain within the first half century AD. Eusebius clearly states that the Apostles preached in Britain (including Ireland). Gildas is more pointed and states that Christianity came to Britain during the reign of the Roman Emperor Tiberius. Taking both Eusebius' and Gildas' assertions into account, it can be deduced that Christianity arrived in Britain at the latest by 37AD (a maximum of four years after Christ's Ascension [although it is likely that Christ's birth was misdated by 4-6 years which, extrapolating, would mean that the Ascension occurred circa 27-29AD which would mean that Christianity would have arrived in Britain a maximum of 10 years later]). It is known that St Augustine was sent on mission from Rome to consolidate Christianity in 597 and few would dispute that England was a Catholic nation from that date until the Reformation. Therefore, taking everything into account, the minimum period that England was a Catholic nation was 939 years (597-1536 - the "post-Augustinian" dates) and the maximum period was 1,499 years (37-1536 - the "Eusebian/Gildas" dates).

Has England ever been Catholic?

England was originally Celtic, there are legends that Catholicism was brought to England in the first century, but the first established written history of Catholicism in England began with St. Augustine of Canterbury's mission from Rome to bring Christianity to England in 597. England remained Catholic until Henry VIII violently suppressed the Church between 1533 and 1536 killing many Catholic Christians, turning monks and nuns out of their monasteries, and stealing all the Churches, monasteries, rectories, schools, and everything else that belong to the Catholic Church and Catholics. This was an horrendous time in England, priests caught celebrated the most Holy Eucharist, were drawn and quartered before being burned at the stake. Heaven was filled with many holy martyrs during those years. Catholicism was not re-established until 1829.

Is Roman Catholic older that Byzantine?

Roman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is rarely used by the Catholic Church. It was first used in a widespread manner after the protestant revolt in the sixteenth century in England. Byzantine Catholic is a common term for Eastern Orthodox, who broke from the Church in the 11th century. Thus Byzantine would be older. However, if you are asking if Catholic or Byzantine is older, then Catholicism started in the first century when Our Blessed Lord commissioned St. Peter as the first pope (see St. Matthew 16:17-19), so that was eleven centuries before the Byzantine Church broke away.
