Since the arrival of James Cook and his buddies, they brought along horses, mules, donkeys and camels which is how the enormous Continent was explored - but that was 200 years ago. Matthew Flinders who cirumnavigated the coastline got around in a little boat to map the outline of Australia - and that too was over 200 years ago. Since then there's been the invention of the steam engine and there have been trains which is how most people would've got around the country. In the past 100 years, (if that's what you mean by past), getting around Australia would have been by the mode of transport we all enjoy today - train, bus, plane, car, bicycle, motorcycle and ever increasingly, caravan.
