A clinical psychologist holds a doctorate such as a Ph.D. or Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology) and has a state license in order to practice. Clinically oriented programs are usually about 5 years in length (4 years of classes and 1 year of full time internship), post bachelor's degree, that is! Research Psychologists generally hold a Ph.D. and work in academic settings, therefore generally do not have a license.

Master's level counselors usually have a different type of license. Examples include "Marriage and Family Therapist" license or "Licensed Counselor" Master's programs generally range from 2-3 years if you go full time.

AnswerWell I am not sure how much psychologists make but I went to my guidence counselor to get information on psychology. And he said that psychologists have to go to college for 2years to get their Assoc. Degree, 4 years to get their Bach., 6 years to get their Mast. Degree and 8 years for their PHD. Answer4 years for a B.A or B.S degree, given the time dedicated toward the degree, it can be completed much sooner. 18 months to 2 years for your masters given your field of study. Usually 4 years for your Ph.D, it could take less or longer, the 4 years greatly depends on the students ability to dedicate time to study.

So, under normal circumstances anywhere from 8 to 10 years for your Doctorate egree in Psychology.

Best wishes

AnswerThe actual total time it takes to get a PhD in some discipline of psychology depends upon the discipline of psychology (i.e. clinical, social, cognitive neuroscience, etc.), the school's program, and the student.

First step: BA or BS degree. It isn't required that one has an undergraduate degree is psychology in order to get into a psychology doctoral program. However, it is recommended that you do. On average, at the school that I attended, to get a BA in psychology, it takes about 4 years. For a BS degree, it depends on the requirements of the school you are attending and if you have more than one major.

When I was attending college, going for two BS degrees, where one was in psychology, the average time to completion for a BS degree in psychology (if that was your only major) was about 4.5 years, while a BS degree in computer science (my other major), took students, on average, about 5 years to complete. For me, completing both simultaneously took six years. Overall, if you are pursuing more than one degree, then expect it to take more than 4 years to get your undergraduate degrees.

Next step: a graduate program. Here, it depends on the type of psychology discipline one is striving for. I will discuss a clinical psychology program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), as an example, given that I had done extensive research in such a career track for myself, before entering the world of software engineering.

Most of the professors and graduate students in the clinical psychology program at my school conveyed to me the following summarized in bullet-point form:

2 years to get your MA degree 4-6.5 years to get your PhD degree

However, if you are attending a program accredited by the APA, you must enter the program with the intentions of getting your PhD. You can't just get your MA. The only reason why one would just get their MA in such a program is if they flunk out of achieving the PhD component of the program or stop. However, this is frowned upon.

Further, getting in to a clinical psychology program is very competitive. It is highly recommended that one holds a strong skill-set in statistics. Also, it is not recommended that one only know a lot about facts and issues pertaining to psychology alone. In order to stand out and get into a good program, one should be a polymath in at least two different areas of study (e.g. Biology and psychology or English and psychology or, even, computer science and psychology). This is recommended, since the field of psychology tries to bridge different fields together, in order to create a more holistic picture of some phenomena. Further, it keeps things dynamic and fun.

My guess is 8-10. If you are going to college, you'd better brush up on your spelling. A collage is an assortment of pictures. I don't think that will get you a degree in anything, not even art!

The PhD would take approximately four years post bachelor's to complete. The degree can run up to 60 credits in coursework particular to a specific field of study. The actual length of time depends much on how long it takes a student to prepare and defend their dissertation which typically follows the prescribed credit coursework. The dissertation is an individual student project advancing an original view point on a topic of the students choosing. It is developed through extensive supporting research and must be approved by the designated committee.

A bachelor's degree in most areas can require between 120 to 128 college credits particular to a specific program of study. This would be based on a college or university that operates on a regular two semester academic year which is the most common. For institutions that operate on a tri-semester or quarter-semester it would be quite different. That being said, the Bachelor's degree - in most cases - is designed as a four year program of study, provided the student is full-time and follows their chosen program of study as prescribed by the college or university, and also provided the individual does not require prerequisite or developmental coursework as a result of basic skills testing. The minimum credit load for a full-time student is no less than 12 credits per semester. However, to complete the degree within the four years, a credit load of approximately 15 to 18 credits is recommended. For individuals who work or who have other responsibilities that would prohibit them from attending full-time, completion of the degree may take twice as long. Still, some of this time can be cut down by attending summer sessions and/or interim sessions. In addition, the bachelors and associate degrees are referred to as undergraduate degrees while the masters and doctorate degrees referred to as graduate degrees.
