Following that would be an internship of a year or two, and if you are going to be a specialist, a residency that can be from 2-8 years long, depending on the speciality. For example, the residency to be pediatrician may be only 3 years, while the residency to be a neurosurgeon may be 8. In some cases, more training after a residency can be done as a fellowship to gain experience in a subspeciality.
