Nobody knows. He is considered to be a legendary figure and there are many tales of him over the years and, indeed, over the centuries. First references to Robin Hood begin in the thirteenth century, and go on from there. There is no historical verification, but it all makes a great story! In my novel The Robin Hood Chronicles I identify the Robin Hood of the ballads with the Robyn Hod who was valet and porter to Edward II. My reasoning is that in one of the ballads King Edward takes Robin Hood into his service. Robyn Hod's birth date is unknown, but there are no records of him past 1345. In the novel I conjecture that he died of the Black Death in 1348.
