It's not a fixed number of years, but figuring 3-4 generations per century is a pretty reasonable estimate.

This of course refers to human generations - animals, plants, bacteria, viruses all have varying generation periods. The following website, however, argues that humans started out with a generation length of 930 years. I'm not sure which database they rely on for their information!:

The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, for instance, has a generation length of around ten days, which is why it is so widely used for genetic research.

A generation is usually considered to be forty years.

Additional Information:Hebrew dor refers to the life cycle of an individual, either from birth to death or from birth to birth of the first child. Genesis 15:13-16 apparently equates 400 years with four generations, thus, 100 years per generation.

Numbers 32:11-13 may reckon a generation as 60 years, including people 20 and above and giving them 40 more years to live. One may interpret this to mean a generation is the 40 years of adulthood between the ages of 20 and 60.

Job lived 140 years and saw four generations (Job 42:16). This would make a generation about 35 years. Basically, generation is not a specific number of years but a more or less specific period of time.

A generation can be defined differently by different disciplines. In genealogy, it can be anywhere from 25-30 years, depending on the source used. In any event, it is no less than 25 years and no more than 30 years.

It should be about 20 years or so. Maybe 5 years less or more, depending on countries and epochs.

How long does a generation live?

There is no specific definition. Many people use 20 years as a general estimate, but it varies. Some use 25 years and some are beginning to use 33 years. A father can be 60 years older than his son and that would make that generation 60 years.
