Socrates' method of teaching (known as the Socratic method) is often considered the foundation of all modern education. His pupil, Plato, started the worlds first university called The Academy and began a tradition which survives today.

His teachings regarding wisdom, truth and justice had a massive influence on western philosophy and still resonate with modern thought.

Of course what we know about Socrates we mostly only know from the writings of Plato, and it could be argued that he therefor is the truly influential one.
