Her work was influenced a great deal by both World Wars, and she, like many Modernists, attempted to create something completely new with her work. A journal is incredibly useful to a writer. Any time the writer has an idea for a plot, character, conversation, name, event, description, etc. they can write it down in their journal so they don't forget it and so it can be used in later writing. Because of this a journal should really be carried at all times, since you never know when inspiration will strike!
