How does society benefit if poor people are given special attention?

Society as a whole benefits in a couple of ways. One, if special attention is paid to the poor, then the low side of our standard of living as a society rises. Another way is overall less worry about the future. Instead of believing that we'll be destitute and might as well be dead if we become poor... if we as a society take care of our own, then we all have that confidence... if something horrible happens, people will still take care of me. I will be okay, no matter what... society as a whole would be less frightened about the future if we actually took care of each other in that way.
