The old recommendation was no more than 4000 mg per day for healthy adults (good kidneys and liver). This is 8 extra strength tablets or 12 regular strength tablets per day. The FDA Advisory board has recommended decreasing this, and the FDA will probably do so. Keep in mind that acetaminophen (the active ingredient of Tylenol) can be found in other pain killers and cold and sinus medications. Check for it if you are taking Tylenol with other medications.

Taking Tylenol according to the directions on the package is pretty close (some might say dangerously close) to the maximum. The recommended dose is 4000 mg daily (for adults); 6000 mg daily is really pushing it. This would be 12 "extra-strength" tablets.

It's not a coincidence that acetaminophen (Tylenol) is the most common cause of acute liver failure in the US.

There is just a little bit of difference in the two, but not much. For someone that does not have a high tolerance for pain medications, it will work just fine for them, as to where if you take pain medications every day it will do nothing for you.

If you take at least 6 Tylenol a day are you addicted?

Only you can decide what you are addicted to. However, please keep in mind that Tylenol has acetaminophen. This chemical has been proved to be the leading cause of liver failure in the U.S. Therefore, when you're taking 6 Tylenol a day, you're damaging your liver. You should contact a doctor if you are experiencing chronic pain that leads you to take 6 Tylenol a day.
